Yes, Markham is slated to host some of the events in the The 2015 Pan American Games. Toronto is the city which won the bidding for the 2015 Pan Am Games which is an athletic competition held every 4 years where athletes from countries within North, South, and Central America can compete. The next games in the GTA will see about 5,000 athletes competing in sports ranging from soccer and track and field to swimming and equestrian show jumping.
According to Wikipedia, the Toronto 2015 Organizing Committee along with all 3 levels of government are expected to spend C$ 1.4 billion to upgrade facilities and build new venues in the region. New venues such as the Markham Pan Am Centre, a 147,000 sq ft facility on a 7.8-acre lot bordered by Main Street, Rivis Road, Enterprise and YMCA boulevards in Markham will host badminton, table tennis and water polo competitions.
The Markham facilities will feature an Olympic-sized 10-lane, 50-metre swimming pool; 15-metre movable floor and two one-metre movable bulkheads; total seating capacity 2,000; competition-related touch pads, timers, clock, competitive lane ropes, areas for dry land training and instruction on pool deck.
These latest developments are all part of the local Markham city government’s attempt to improve Markham’s brand image and put it on the International map. The new cultural and entertainment facilities should make Markham residents feel good about the direction the town is taking.
