Shrink Wrapping – Cost Effective, Safe Transport
Many years ago, I was working on a loading dock for a major hardware chain in Western Canada, waiting for truck shipments to come in from Ontario 2200+ miles away.
Sometimes we couldn’t get the rear door of the container to open. The loads had shifted so badly, it left them in a twisted mess with plenty of damaged goods for us to gather up.
I think today, that’s a little less common, but it happens enough. Small to medium-sized manufacturers should be careful how their products appear when they reach their final destination. The issue is; how to ensure goods are safe in transit.
Shrink-wrap (polyethylene film) was used with skids holding products, but it was normally hand-wrapped. But hand-wrapped wasn’t sufficient for the journey then, and even now. The roadways will always be plagued with potholes, and congested with drivers slowing and accelerating faster. It’s not always the driver of the truck who is at fault.
There’s only so much a truck driver can do to lessen the shock and shifts of weight that occur during road transport, so you have to pack and wrap the skid well yourself. Preventing damage and insurance claims is just good business.
Skids get loaded with a variety of odd shaped products, many of which are metal and heavy and even lopsided.
Shrink wrap done manually may not apply consistent tension to pre-stretch it and that means loose loads that will fall apart, or they apply it too strong and crush some of your boxes. Machines ensure it’s pre-stretched to the right tension and wrapped correctly.
